Abstract High-speed compressor testing is costly due to mechanical complexity and hazardous the high energy involved. In past this has limited speed amount of testing. paper a new rig architecture presented that aims test scaled transonic stage rapidly. It builds upon low-speed rapid developments made at Whittle Laboratory potential accelerate technology development. The power input requirement reduced by half-scale Reynolds number while maintaining Mach number. Further saving simplification achieved employing turbo-expander with no shaft-power input, only aerodynamic losses in system must be overcome. design presented. Safe operation access rebuild times are critical. hardware machined from solid bladed disks rings can manufactured days. Only standard instrumentation required, although novel control loop employed achieve same accuracy rotational as an electric motor driven rig. Experiments up 25% were conducted, results here show controllable inherently safe if research fails. will run full immediate future extension capability planned multi-stage high-speed second machine.
